The government of Nigeria passed a legislation that will see French made a compulsory subject in primary and secondary schools. The idea behind this move was so that Nigerian citizens can be able to tap into the political, economic, cultural and diplomatic advantages of learning the language.
This declaration was made public by the Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives Emeka Ihedioha who made the announcement during the 20th anniversary of the Nigeria French Language Village [ LOL in different languages. French today is spoken around the world by 65 to 80 million people as a native language, and by about to million people as a second or third language, with significant speakers in 54 countries.
French is an official language in 29 countries, and it is an official language of all United Nations agencies and a large number of international organizations. It is the third most spoken second language in the European Union, after English and German respectively.
